Plumber Licensing, Education & Exam Prep

In Kentucky, all plumbing work must be installed by a licensed journeyman plumber under the supervision of a licensed master plumber. We offer a course with exam prep, the books for the exam, and additional services to help you obtain your license. All of our training is offered in an online self-paced format. What are the requirements to getting a license?

Journeyman Plumber

• Pass the Kentucky Journeyman Plumber Exam
• Proof of compliance with Worker’s Compensation and Unemployment Insurance laws
• Submit verifiable proof of one of the following:
  • 2 consecutive years as a plumbing apprentice OR
  • Complete approved course and have 1 year as an apprentice plumber

  

  Master Plumber

  • Pass the Kentucky Master Plumber Exam
  • Obtain general liability insurance policy of $250,000 unless operating as an employee of a person, firm, or corporation
  • Proof of compliance with Worker’s Compensation and Unemployment Insurance laws
  • Submit verifiable proof of one of the following:
    • Have held a valid Journeyman Plumber license for at least two of the 5 years preceding application with a minimum of 2 years of experience under a Master Plumber.
    • Hold an engineer license in Kentucky and be sufficiently experienced in mechanical engineering, as determined by the department based upon the number and complexity of the applicant’s past mechanical engineer projects
    • Hold a valid plumbing licensed in another state for at least 2 of the 5 years preceding application
    • Have been engaged in plumbing in a capacity equivalent to a master plumber in a state that does not issue licenses for at least 4 consecutive years preceding application

    How do I obtain a license?

    To apply for your license, contact the Kentucky Construction Industry Licensing Board at 502-573-0397 or visit dhbc.ky.gov.

    Kentucky requires each licensee to complete continuing education prior to each renewal. Kentucky has no reciprocity agreements.

    PASS THE STATE EXAM

    After studying with RocketCert, you will be on your way to passing the required State exam(s) (see below). Pre-approval is not required. Testing centers are setup throughout the State in larger cities.

    Exams are given during the months of February, May, August, and November.

    APPLY FOR YOUR LICENSE

    After passing the exam and completing all the steps above, it will be time to apply through the DHCB to obtain your Kentucky Plumbing License. Licensees must provide proof of insurance at this time.

    Kentucky Journeyman Plumber Exam

    • Time: 2.5 hours (Written) & 2.5 hours (Practical)
    • CLOSED BOOK

    Topics Include: Basic principles of plumbing; KRS Chapter 318; 815 KAR Chapter 2; 815 KAR Chapter 20

    Written Portion

    During the written portion of the exam, you will be asked to insert the proper pipe size on a prepared drawing that indicates all stacks, wastes, and vents as well as the connected plumbing fixtures. Sizing the main stacks properly is the main focus of the exam. Deductions will be given for under-sizing or over-sizing piping.

    Practical Portion

    The practical portion of the exam is designed to test the applicants ability to properly install plumbing by making proper connections of various plumbing materials and similar activities. The applicant is required to furnish their own materials to be used in this section of the exam. The department will contact the applicant within a week of the exam date to inform them of the required materials.

    • Time: 2.5 hours
    • CLOSED BOOK

    How do I pass the exam?

    The Kentucky Plumber exams are open book. This reference is permitted to be tabbed and highlighted! Unfortunately, our online course is NOT permitted to be accessed during the State exam.
